After a busy time preparing, I could finally show my work in Boathouse 4, Portsmouth Historic Dockyard. My lightboxes are on display at aspex until October 24, as well as my slide show in the old guard rooms at Vernon Gate, Gunwharf Quay.

It's been a great day! Sunny and warm, and I finally built a bench for the garden, the medal-winning garden at Art Space. Bliss.

autumn - one year later

I find it hard to belive that more than one year has passed since I came to Portsmouth. Returning now for the exhibition felt like coming home. It has been a fantastic experience to be at Art Space, to have the beach within walking distance, and to fall into the pace of another city. I hope to keep in touch, maybe return for other projects, maybe just for a social visit?

a road trip, 12 hours, 5 countries. Nice but exhausting. Yet, I prefer this way of travelling to just getting on a plane.

Packing, finding storage space, leaving my studio. It's been a fantastic autumn, and I'm already looking forward to coming back next year. The next months I'll be busy preparing for my show with Aspex. I'm excited!

My work looks so different according to whether day or night - therefore here some photos from diferent times of the day and evening.

Projection from my studio onto the wall next door, visible from the street as well as from inside the building- greeting the visitors as they come along..

The first impression when coming up the stairs; I opened the little door to the studio. Some members from Art Space, who have known the building for several years, had never noticed this door before - the space looks different seen from different positions.

My models - like threedimensional sketches, and their shadows.

The structure inside my studio, and to the left the reflection of the projection on the wall outside (the window functions as a mirror, very convenient).
Losing a sense of depth, lines connecting and intersecting, in the pile of windows as well as in the wooden structure.

The photographic recordings after my time here, from all the 'white areas', the blank spaces on the map, that I went to over the last weeks. 36 images showing the coastline, or the borders making it impossible to get to the water.
To the left my latex piece from underneath Southsea pier. It was quite popular on friday night, people sniffing and touching it; it's very soft and got sand enclosed in it, and traces of rust as well. Had a difficult time getting the light right, some bulbs make it appear almost pink, in daylight it looks yellowish-white, and that is how I prefer it.

Couldn't resist having one 4x2 poking through the panel towards the roof. The space behind is massive; this is after all a former church, and the height to the ceiling is a couple of metres. Some of my wood will be painted - in a light blue and rusty orange and dark green, - how bold is that!!

Finally no rain and low tide at the same time. Got the latex mould done. Great fun to apply the talc in windy weather. Police thought this was worth having a look at as well.

Still extremely windy, it was a 10 this morning. I went to the beach, got almost blown away. Lots of foam on the waves, horizontal rain. I like wild weather. The air smells so good.

Most of my time here at Art Space is over, cannot quite believe it. I'm in the middle of finishing one project, starting on another model, writing a proposal, just borrowed a video camera, need to shoot my super8 film, and thinking about how to continue next year. Went to the re-store meeting yesterday, and fingers crossed, there might be an empty shop = project space available very soon. Though I have to admit, the building of my dream would be Brunel House. It just sits there all empty, with the greatest views, and a train station right next door. A Sproutbau (www.sproutbau.de) waiting to happen...

Gave my talk at the university today, came well prepared with lots of images from the last years. And was quite surprised so many students turned up on time, at 10 o'clock on a monday morning! People asked lots of questions as well, really good. Helpful and challenging to hear their response and perceptions.

Paulsgrove

Joined the city council on a site visit to Paulsgrove Chalkpit. Lots of lines in the landscape. Learned about Paulsgrove that it was just meant as a temporary residential area right after the war, re-housing people from the destroyed parts of town. Now the houses are still there. They were never meant to last that long, therefore maintenance is quite a challenge now. Impressed by the panoramic view from the chalkpit. But always noise from the motorway in the background.

Friday evening, book launch, caravan gallery celebrated their new book and showed their film from South Bank, Teesside. Interesting work!! For the occasion, I opened the doors to my space..

Testing different light. Previously, I set up my work in areas with natural light, morning sun and strong shadows. There is not much daylight in my space here, and the days are getting so short as well. A good opportunity for me to work with different artificial light. I'm also more and more interested in silhouettes, what happens if there is not a spotlight on the structure, but the light coming from behind.

Planted tulips and daffodils today! In the lovely art space garden - only a shame that I won't be here when they flower. Hope Adrian will remember to send me a photo!!!

constructions above and under water

Got a whole series of photographs by now of structures close to or above the sea. I find it most fascinating how different these constructions appear depending on the water level. I'm getting more and more interested in their foundations, what do they stand on? Their spacing and repeating patterns. I've started researching concrete as a material to work with.

It's autumn and the animals are moving in. Tried to convince the mouse that life underneath the sofa was good but life out in the open was even better. Not sure I managed. He sat in his little box chewing on a piece of cheese while we cycled to the beach. I'm enjoying myself here on the coast, the wildlife is fantastic.

Now I'm in the middle of developing a proposal for one of the spaces here at ASP. A structure greeting you as you enter the building, translating the angles from piers and jetties on the coast into a maze of triangular shapes. Having been to Tipner, the colours left a strong impression. Started mixing a colour range that I'd like to try out - a very light faded blue, a rusty orange-brown, a greenish blue-grey. Might apply colours onto the walls as an extension of the actual threedimensional lines.

Yesterday another day of trying to cycle and and walk along the coastline, this time to the north of the city centre. So many areas are fenced off. Constant noise of the motorway in the background. Amazing colours and sharp sunlight.

It all started with Natalie giving me the Ordnance Survey map of Portsmouth on my first day here. I enjoy reading maps, and this one seemed quite exciting: So many areas were left blank and streets just ending into a white nothing. I want to see what has been left out on this map; e.g. areas such as Tipner and Thorney Island.

access - no access....the first island I've ever visited where you have to ring a bell, identify yourself, leave your phone number, postcode, any bags or cameras? yes. ...and then you're allowed to walk around the island on a marked footpath. Arriving at the other end, the same procedure, name, phone number, post code....

Good to be back in my studio. And finally, all my materials are here as well!
Now it's time to have a look at all those photos from the last months, and to make plans for my time here in Portsmouth. Will spend sometime travelling along the coastline, daytrips by bike or foot - I'm in a harbour city, after all...

What a busy week. But good. Managed to get on the coach from Portsmouth to London, then hire a van and drive my materials from Archway to Shoreditch, build a structure, and it was all ready, and the floor dusted within less than two days :)

There is so much sky in Portsmouth.

Especially now, after this year in London, I just enjoy it so much to sit on the beach, watch the sky change colour and see all those boats and big cargo ships passing by.

Frauke Materlik's projects have been exhibited in both Germany and Scandinavia. As well as working with sculpture and installation, she also engages with photography and performance. The keywords for many of her projects are loneliness, anonymity, neighbourhoods and the border between reality and fiction.

Frauke creates environments, referring to them as dreamscapes, fictional landscapes between materiality and immateriality.

Most of her work is ephemeral and created within a specific space.
